I just gotta say something. Most of it really is just an opinion and some stuff I got from interviews with JK Rowling. This is just a response to some stuff that I’ve seen, and kind of made me upset. Not saying you should ship Snape and Lily and all that stuff, but I kind of feel like some people are being a little too harsh on him…

There’s quite a few people out there saying that Severus Snape was a dick. Ok, yeah. Maybe he was a little bit. Maybe his love was selfish. Maybe he didn’t change for Lily. Ok, I got that. But in my opinion, he’s kind of really misunderstood. In his childhood, Snape definitely did not grow in a very loving environment. In TPT, he tells Lily of how is parents were always arguing. He also wasn’t the most social person. Before Hogwarts, Lily was one of his very few friends, if not only. But when he got to Hogwarts, all he wanted was someone to accept him. And JKR even said, “he craved membership of something big and powerful, something impressive. He wanted Lily and he wanted Mulciber too.” He was insecure and vulnerable and he let his desire to be wanted get the best of him. JKR also said, “He was so blinded by his attraction to the dark side he thought she [Lily] would find him impressive if he became a real Death Eater.” That’s another reason why he got into Dark Magic. He wanted to impress Lily. And he thought being a powerful wizard would do that.

“If he were such a great person and he truly loved Lily, he wouldn’t hate Harry.”

Snape’s not the greatest person, obviously. But truthfully, who is? We’re all human, and we all have our flaws. And we all have someone we don’t always like. And I don’t think he hated or disliked Harry. I think he was probably just really confused about him. Snape, to me, will do anything to keep Harry alive because he is the son of the woman he loves. But we can’t forget that Harry is also the son of his worst enemy. The son of the person who constantly bullied him. I don’t really blame Snape for not liking Harry that much because Harry is a physical representation of James.

“Snape never grew up.”

He did. He switched sides as soon as he found out Voldemort was hunting Lily. I know it’s a bad reason to switch sides, and he probably should have switched just because it was the right thing to do, but once he realized how his mistakes have hurt others, especially the woman he loved most, he changed for the better. Lily brought out the best of him, especially when she died. If you’re saying he never grew up because he couldn’t let go of his grudges, that’s kind of dumb to me. Again, we’re all human, and sometimes, we really just can’t help it. The one woman that he really loved married the man who constantly bullied him. I don’t think anything hurts more than that. Maybe, in my opinion, if Lily had married anyone other than James, it wouldn’t have hurt as much for Snape. Although, it still would have really hurt him.

People say that Snape doesn’t deserve Lily Evans. I don’t exactly believe in that, but if I did, Severus Snape, in my opinion, did deserve Lily Evans. Maybe not at first, but he definitely redeemed himself by protecting Harry so that Lily wouldn’t die in vain. A lot of you probably don’t agree with me because it was his fault in the first place that he lost her. True, but Lily was also the only person who really made him happy and feel like he was worth something. Everyone in this world deserves to be happy.

Another thing, we’re all human, so let’s not focus on all of Snape’s shortcomings, but on the things that he did accomplish. After all, he did try to make up for his mistakes.
